The magic afternoon tea at the five-star Vintry and Mercer Hotel is truly something else. For starters, your afternoon tea arrives with mystical dry ice swirling around it! The menu is inspired by witches and wizards and features fun treats like white chocolate owls and a ‘Box of Bones’ filled with chewy skeleton candies and chocolate soil. Sweet treats are similar for both adults and kids, though I’d say flavours are slightly more complex – it’s slightly better for older children. On the other hand, the savoury bites are very child-friendly – our little ones enjoyed the jam sandwiches and mini sausage rolls. Plus, the ‘Truth Spell’ hot chocolate with fluffy marshmallows was also a big hit!

The kid’s menu consists of child-friendly sandwiches like cheese, ham, and egg mayo. But you’re really here for the sweet treats, right? You’ll get to slurp on caramel chocolate milkshakes, fabulous fluffy candy floss, fizzy lifting lemonade posset ‘Hair toffee’ mousse and more!
Strangely, we found our little ones were actually more into the drinks on offer. You can opt for ‘Fizzy Lifting Drinks’ which are essential mocktails for kids. But for any bookworm in the family, they’ll love the attention to detail. Plus, the afternoon tea is taken in a special Chocolate-factory-themed area with its own ‘Good Nut/Bad Nut’ barometer, which kids will love.

5. Science afternoon tea at The Ampersand Hotel
Just around the corner from the Science Museum, The Ampersand Hotel has made a name for itself for its Sci-Fi afternoon tea for kids! You take the afternoon tea in the dining area, which is cosy and never too packed with people. The entire experience was very luxurious – I found the restaurant staff to be super attentive and knew exactly how to speak to our little ones.
The star of the show is of course the menu. The sweet treats are all science and outer space themed, with fun creations like chocolate space men and chocolate and blackcurrant planets. They pull out all the stops – the tea is served in a bright red rocket and they use dry ice when they deliver the stand to you!
We found the best part was the amount of food you get. It’s a huge amount, and you can also request more of anything for free. We ended up taking a lot home for later!

This is a fun one! Afternoon tea bus tours are always a hit with little ones, but they’re even better when they’re themed. Hosted aboard a classic double-decker bus, the 90-minute tour takes you past some of the capital’s most iconic sights, including Big Ben, The London Eye, and Harrods. Plus, you’ll cruise past famous locations like Fleet Street and Piccadilly Circus while the driver points them out along the way.
The experience onboard is also pretty fun and designed to keep everyone entertained. For example, you get to play an interactive Monopoly-themed game against the other passengers using the iPads provided. And you have a host on board who gives you fun facts and trivia at each landmark, plus interacts with the guests every so often.
The afternoon tea menu is fairly family-friendly. Our little ones liked the Pass ‘GO’lden Chocolate Brownie and the 24 Carrot Cupcake. Above everything else though, they just loved being on a double-decker bus and seeing Big Ben! In my opinion, this is one of the more relaxed ways to see London – there’s nothing worse than navigating the tube with little ones…

Another one from The Ampersand, but this time, you can travel back in time to when dinosaurs walked the Earth! Their Jurassic afternoon tea is just as fun as the science-themed tea, and also comes swirling in dry ice. The savoury menu is pretty similar to the sciene menu, but for sweet treats you’ll get to try orange jelly dinosaurs, a volcano chocolate with mango lava, dark chocolate dinosaur nests and a mini dinosaur biscuit! The sweet treats are fairly similar for the adult and children’s menu, and I’d say this is a little more complex, flavour-wise – older children might prefer this!

Fans of Disney afternoon teas will just love the Mad Hatter’s inspired high tea at the Sanderson in London. The whole menu is inspired by Alice in Wonderland and includes a peach bubble tea ‘Drink Me’ potion, mini ‘rabbit in the hole’ chocolate flower pots, knights-chess red velvet cake and more. The menu is very fantastical and the presentation is second to none – you’ll even drink tea out of Alice-themed teapots and teacups. The only downside is that the savoury treats are a little too sophisticated. We had omelette and cream cheese spread sandwiches and strawberry mascarpone sandwiches, which weren’t great for fussy eaters. Online, the Sanderson says ‘Available for children ages 4-11’, and I’d say this is best suited for kids on the older end of the spectrum.
